I recently read The Blue Zones Solution that completely changed my view on food and how to use it for longevity and vitality. I know that there’s more than just ONE thing to help you create good health, and of course I know that food is a vital part of that. But this book painted health and LIFE in such a vibrant way that I couldn’t help but examine the way I was doing things in my own home and kitchen.

Dan Buettner takes us on a journey to different parts of the world – Italy, Greece, Costa Rica, Japan, and California – where some of the healthiest people live. He interviewed a handful of centenarians who shared their lifestyle tips for living past 100 years of age, gracefully and youthfully. My advice is that if you want want to die young at a really old age, you must get your hands on these books.
With the Achieving Bliss Cleanse start date quickly approaching, I decided to let myself be inspired by the book and the results have been astounding! (I later purchased the cookbook and I’m excited to prepare some of the delicious meals found there – especially the breads!) My husband is doing the 4-week program, too, and he’s yet to complain about a dissatisfying meal or feeling hungry. He claims to love the way his gut is feeling less inflamed and trimmer! I like that my sleep is back-to-normal, my moods have gotten lighter, my brain is sharper, and I’m playing around a lot more in my kitchen – something that I had lost touch with since letting life take over my schedule.

Here’s a little bit of what we’ve been eating for the past 3 weeks.

Notice how colorful some of the meals are?!

  1. Green Juice made fresh to enjoy each morning, 20-minutes after my warm lemon water with a pinch of Pink Himalayan salt.
  2. Kidney beans, navy beans, black beans, and pinto beans soaking before being turned into a bean chili (not pictured)
  3. Chlorophyll with 2 drops of tangerine essential oil to enjoy under the warm sun. This increases absorption of both Vitamin D3 + chlorophyll! High levels of d-limonene in Tangerine boosts the immune system and supports healthy function, especially during a cleanse.
  4. Fruit cereal with reduced fat coconut milk and homemade granola. Literally, all I did was chop up 1/2 mango, 1/2 banana, a few strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. Mixed them all in a bowl. Sprinkled my low-sugar, homemade granola and added reduced-fat coconut milk. BAM! So good!
  5. One week’s worth of produce to enjoy in various ways. If you have it at home, you’ll eat it. Nothing’s worse than trying to eat healthy but having a pantry filled with junk food…
  6. My friend Cathy was over, so I treated her to a FEAST! We had fresh fruit, sweet mini peppers to dip into the red pepper hummus and classic hummus, falafel cakes (literally out of a box bought at Trader Joe’s. I made these into cakes rather than balls so that I could spritz them with oil rather than deep fry the balls), cashew cream with herbs and lemon, raw almonds, soaked pumpkin seeds, and dates.
  7. BBQ-pulled Jackfruit and onions over a baked potato, and a side of roasted veggies. My friend Suhey and I ate this at a BBQ place in Covina, CA after a women’s wellness event I did on January 18th, and we’re definitely going back.
  8. The hubby’s lunch. Baked potato topped with BBQ pulled chicken, onions, red cabbage, and fresh micro-greens. Served with a side of roasted brussel sprouts with olive oil and sea salt.
  9. The superstars here are the black beans, which I sautéed with shallots and garlic and topped with soaked pumpkin seeds and cashew crema. Enjoyed them over a small amount of basmati rice, a side of steamed sweet potatoes and green olives. YUM.

Something that Dan Buettner said in the book was “Every time we take a bite, we vote for the world that we want to inhabit,” and that resonated with me so loudly. Read it again, and think about it for a minute…

There are so many food manufacturers intentionally creating food addictions in our society by manipulating ingredients that are making us sick. And we increase the demand for these food-like substances every time we add them to our shopping cart and bring them home! What’s this doing to our world?!

  • Obesity rates in children are skyrocketing.
  • Adults are showing up to work when they should be at home because they’re maxed out of their sick time and can’t afford to go without pay.
  • The cost of healthcare has doubled (almost tripled in certain parts of the world).

All the while the most powerful solution is being ignored – IMPROVE YOUR FOOD CHOICES, AND YOU’LL IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH.

Granted, sometimes organic food is pricier than what you get off the value menu at a fast-food restaurant so the question is one of priorities – what’s your health worth? What price would you put on a healthy life you get to enjoy for yourself and your loved ones?

That’s why learning to shop smart is such a great focus.

  1. Try farmers markets.
  2. Stock up on items when they’re on sale.
  3. Try flash-frozen fruits and veggies.
  4. Keep your meals simple.
  5. Batch-cook some of your favorite meals using the same ingredients.

And vote for a better world with your dollars! Buy the kale, sauté it with some spices and add it to a pot of grass-fed mini-meatballs and orzo pasta to make your own (healthy) version of Italian Wedding Soup! Or… try whipping up a pot of vegan pozole, like my sister Maggi and I whipped up for Christmas Dinner. DELICIOSO!
