Most people know essential oils as aromatics that make their house smell amazing – they think of the lavender, lemon and peppermint that they bought at the grocery store. But their super powers stretch far beyond what you’ve seen them do.
The Magic of Essential Oils
Lavender has been used for over 2500 years for medicinal and religious purposes. Today it is probably known as one of the most relaxing compounds in the world. But did you know that when you place a few drops over your throat, Lavender will help you learn to communicate calmly and effectively?
Lemon has played an important role in Ayurvedic medicine when treating conditions that are related to excessive dampness in the body. It’s incredible degreasing properties is what makes it and several of its citrus relatives a must-have in so many DIY cleaning recipes. But did you know that inhaling its refreshing aroma at the start of your work day can create a sense of focus that lets you cut right through the clutter in calendar?
Peppermint is thought to be THE oldest of European herbs for its medicinal properties. It is widely used today to settle digestive discomforts as well as to give you a boost of energy when you’re falling asleep at the 3pm meeting. And when you rub 1 drop over your heart center and inhale gently, it can make a heavy-hearted chest feel light again.
What I’m describing are the physical AND energetic properties of essential oils.
When you are wondering what it’s going to take to get out of debt, and you’re feeling weighed down by anxious feelings – unable to get a good night’s sleep – add a few drops of Wild Orange to your diffuser along with a little lavender and relax into the thought that we live in an abundant world and that you can create a prosperous life for you and your loved ones.
Wild Orange is a very intuitive oil that can both uplift your energy AND help promote restful sleep – it knows what you need when you need it. Energetically, it is known as the Oil of Abundance making it an important addition to your meditative rituals where you can connect with your higher self in manifesting prosperity.
There’s an oil to help you speak confidently in public, and one that helps you tap into unlimited creative bliss.
There’s an oil that will help you accept yourself as you are and one that will help you honor your body.
And there are several oils to help you create boundaries that protect your time and energy from being robbed by others who try pulling you in a million directions at once!
Without Getting Too Technical
Essential Oils have a complex makeup of constitituents – like linalool, limonene, and menthol – that work together with cell receptors and neurotransmitters throughout your entire body to help stimulate chemical reactions that are unique to each oil. When you start playing with them in combination, you can create special vibrations to help elevate your mood and energy.
Are you intrigued?
As a Master Essential Oils Coach, I get asked a lot about oils for physical issues – like overworked muscles, digestive concerns, and immune boosters for school-aged kids. These same people have now discovered that some of their favorites have helped them let go of the baggage they had been dragging around for far-too-long! They find themselves (and their kids) dealing with life’s stressors in a much more productive way, and that’s what I want for you!
Let’s talk. Schedule a 30-Minute Essential Oil Consultation to discover the oils that will help you feel happier and healthier!
Speaking from experience, it feels that life is passing by on turbo speed and we believe that it’s important to keep up the pace. Our two modes of operation are Fast, and Faster. We strategize for weeks (and sometimes months) on the activities that we can cram onto our calendar to stay productive and effective. We pencil in “down-time” only to have that replaced by a last-minute invitation or client who needs our attention.
As a small business owner, I know the importance of being available and ready to say “yes” to potential income. I’ve worked the 14+ hour days for months at a time to stay on top of my obligations – all while simultaneously running a busy household! Did operating at this speed get me more money or more clients? Not consistently.
CRASH! Is the statement that comes to mind when I think about what I got in return. That numbness you get when you’re running from one commitment to another and you don’t even know how you’re still upright. The dissonance that keeps the hamster spinning in your head at night while your body is screaming for sleep. CRASH! The dread that comes over you when it’s 6pm and you just want to crawl into bed but you still need to feed the dog (and maybe yourself) and shower and play nice with others at home.
I was feeling downright crappy for several months last year. I went to several doctors and payed a small fortune in deductibles and copays only to hear, “Your vitals are great. There’s nothing wrong with you, Mrs. Q (‘cause they can NEVER say my last name). I’m not sure why you’re feeling this way. Everything looks normal. Get plenty of rest and continue eating what you’re eating.” They couldn’t explain my random symptoms!
At times, I felt like someone had shoved their hand right through my chest and was squeezing my heart.
I couldn’t yawn without the sides of my mouth RIPPING open.
I’d recover from one cold only to catch another.
Sometimes I’d sleep up to 12 hours straight, wake up to eat, then take a nap shortly after.
I ate olives (hint: salt cravings) at just about every meal – no joke, ask people.
Coffee? There was never enough.
Being totally vulnerable, this was a very embarrassing and frustrating time. Nothing infuriated me more than hearing, “but you’re a health coach, you’re supposed to be healthy.” I was trying and I was failing!
How This All Began
Honestly, lack of balance and self-discipline. If I took a day off from work, I’d occupy it with house chores and errands. If I planned a trip to visit family out of town, I’d take advantage of the time there to host classes. If I sat down to watch a movie, I’d plan my social media content for the month. The point is that I was always working.
If I wasn’t working, I felt lazy.
If I wanted to sleep in, I’d 5-4-3-2-1 myself out of bed. (I’m not blaming Mel Robbins.)
If I gave myself time off during the day, I’d work through the night or on the weekend to catch up.
I abused myself and blamed it on growth and development.
I knew there was something wrong and I thought I could figure it out on my own. I didn’t and I got worse.
Bring On The Healing
Healing began after consulting with a naturopathic specialist and with my chiropractor who identified my symptoms as the cause of adrenal dysfunction and severe vitamin deficiencies.
They tasked me with learning how to make MY HEALTH a priority. This meant no sugar, no caffeine, no alcohol, no dairy, no gluten. I was to eat plenty of nutritious meals (which I had all wrong based on what my body was lacking), focus on restorative exercise, declutter my life and say “no” to energy-sucking activities (and people!).
Basically, everything that I had been teaching my clients to do I now had to do for myself!
Within ONE week of starting the program, I felt a noticeable difference. I’d forgotten how great it feels to feel great. (That’s the problem! We get so accustomed to feeling sick that we don’t recognize when we feel sicker. Does that make sense?)
Mother Nature is a Genius!
I was put on a strict regimen of vitamins, minerals and superfoods, which I complemented with essential oils and adaptogens like ashwaghanda, rhodiola, maca, and medicinal mushrooms.
I made a personalized blend of essential oils that includes Basil, Lavender, Thyme and other oils. I rub the “Adrenal Love” above the kidney area and on the bottom of my feet morning and night to help support my recovery.
My day begins with dōTERRA’s Balance Grounding Blend. I add a few drops to the palm of my hand, rub and inhale deeply before applying to my 3rd eye and meditating on my intention for the day.
I support my body’s natural detoxing abilities by adding a few drops of Lemon to my water and drink throughout the day.
My night-time ritual is my favorite! That’s where you’ll find me unwinding in my backyard, reading a book that no-doubt one of my sisters gave me (we do that, give each other books) before heading upstairs to a room filled with the scent of Serenity + Cedarwood misting from my diffuser. MAN! Talk about a good night’s sleep!
As For My Calendar
It’s a lot cleaner now that I’ve learned to be more protective of my time. I’m a bit more selective about whom I choose to work with. I run client prospects through my 10 Paradigms of Healthy Living; if they agree, we work together. If they don’t, “hasta la vista, baby”.
What It’s Really About For Me
My greatest take-away from this experience: I can’t do all the great and wonderful things that I’ve envisioned for myself, my family, my company and my clients if I’m depleted and miserable. Health and Vida (that means “life”, people) is what it’s about, and I intend to enjoy them vibrantly.
Are You Going Through The Same Thing?
There’s an easy way to start your discovery process. Take the Adrenal Level Quiz and find out how you rate with your stress load. Anything less than Thriving (stressed, wired and tired, or crashed) can lead to serious health concerns.
Schedule your private Wellness Consultation with me to discuss your results and unique stressors. Together, we’ll develop a plan that will move out of “surviving” and back into thriving!
The scientific process is characterized by change and progression. Reflecting on standard health protocols that have been used throughout history, it is easy to understand the significance of continual evolution of thought. Just think, there was a time in history when it was common to use leeches and mercury as go-to health care practices. How times have changed! As scientific research continues to expand, we develop a better understanding of human health and wellness.
There has been tremendous progress in understanding the biological interactions of essential oils (1). The oils have been subjected to widespread study in both clinical and experimental research environments, which has given us a greater understanding of their relevance to health than ever before.
Essential Oils Are Unique
Essential oils are physiologically active, which means they directly influence the body. Unique structural features of essential oils allow them to be active both on the surface of cells and within cells.
Every cell is enclosed in a protective barrier called a membrane that serves to maintain the cell as a closed system separate from the outside environment. Imbedded in the membrane are surface receptors that serve as a line of communication between that individual cell and the rest of the body. When the proper substance binds with these receptors, it initiates a cascade of chemical changes on the inner side of the cellular membrane, triggering modifications in the function of the cell. Interaction with these easily accessible receptors is one way that essential oils communicate with cells and impact cellular activity.
The cellular membrane has a crucial double role of keeping out unwanted intruders while still being permeable (passable). Energy sources and other important substances must enter while waste must be removed. Most substances cannot penetrate the cellular membrane, so a number of specialized transport mechanisms (cofactors, transport vesicles, etc.) are employed to allow necessary substances to move into the cell in a controlled and well-regulated fashion.
Substances with certain structural properties can directly traverse the membrane and move into the cell without being limited by the cell’s transport machinery in a process known as passive diffusion. Oxygen, carbon dioxide, alcohol, some drugs, anesthetics, and essential oils are some of the few substances capable of moving in this way. Two features of essential oils enable them to be able to passively diffuse:
- Lipid solubility
- Small molecular size
The cellular membrane is composed of lipids. Because essential oils are lipid soluble and small, they have no problem crossing the membrane.
The lipid soluble nature of essential oils offers them independent function and cell accessibility. Essential oils have the ability to influence cells even when there is physiologic compromise such as during times of poor nutrition or environmental threats. If a cell becomes compromised for any reason, it depends on additional systems and functions within the body to regain optimal function. For example, a compromised cell may lose the ability to efficiently pass substances across its membrane and in turn, have difficulty getting what it needs to maintain itself. Often this becomes a cyclical problem—the cell can’t repair itself without the proper exchange of nutrients, but it can’t get the proper nutrients because membrane transport mechanisms are suboptimal. See the issue? Because essential oils do not depend on cellular transport mechanisms to enter the cell, they can easily cross the cell membrane and provide benefits directly to the cell.
Essential oils can also influence the brain by passing from the blood into the brain. The blood brain barrier is the most secure tissue barrier in the body. It is highly selective in order to protect the fragile tissues of the central nervous system. This barrier only allows passage of certain compounds that are crucial to brain function (glucose, some amino acids, etc.). Novel research has demonstrated that certain sesquiterpene constituents found in essential oils can directly cross the blood brain barrier because of their small molecular size (2-4). Although sesquiterpenes were particularly studied, it is reasonable to assume that other essential oil compounds, especially monoterpenes, which are structurally smaller than sesquiterpenes, can also penetrate the blood brain barrier.
The effects of essential oils are far-reaching regardless of their method of application. Such powerful biological influence would not be possible if essential oil compounds were not lipid soluble and did not have small molecular size. These unique structural properties give essential oils powerful biological influence throughout the body.
Self-Care is the art of taking care of your physical, mental and emotional needs and it is VITAL for your wellbeing! Watch or read below to learn the top 5 benefits that come with taking care of your needs, and how to go about making this practice a non-negotiable. Schedule your Breakthrough Session with me to learn how coaching and the use of essential oils can help YOU live a more vibrant life!
5 Reasons Why Self Care is So Incredibly Important
Reason #1 is that it makes you more productive. When your to-do list is four pages long and you constantly find yourself not making it past item six or seven, productivity becomes truly important. Imagine having the energy to get a lot more done, and not feeling totally drained at the end of the day! Muscling through the busyness of your day is not as effective as recharging your batteries and working with clean fuel.
Reason #2 is that it makes you more resistant to diseases and illnesses. As a health coach, I work with so many different women who are able to transform their immunity, digestion and other vital processes because their central nervous system says, “I’m fine! I’m great! No need for inflammation! Bring on the energy! Get rid of the chronic fatigue! Everything is well!” Stress is the biggest trigger for many conditions – and usually the first thing that decreases dramatically with proper self-care.
Reason #3 is that it boosts your self-confidence and your self-esteem. Imagine what you’re going to be able to do when you have more confidence and your self-esteem is on point! Boosting confidence is what you need and you can do that just by being a little bit more caring to your Self.
Reason #4 is that it improves self-knowledge. It lets you take that deep look inside and discover the things that make you come to life. Those things that make you feel vibrant and that make you feel like you are living your true purpose. Self-knowledge helps you identify the building blocks of your every-day-decisions, as well as those life-changing ones.
Reason #5 is that it makes you more compassionate towards other. It allows for more love in your heart, especially when you find yourself constantly giving and giving. Imagine being able to GIVE with compassion, with love, and with understanding because you have taken care of your needs first. Imagine the kindness!
Making Self-Care a Non-Negotiable
Start by identifying the kinds of things that you’re going to be doing…
You could sit down with a favorite book and a favorite blanket. You can watch a movie. Maybe you can go out and spend some time with your friends. Spend time with your loved ones. Maybe some time with your “Self”, your thoughts and your feelings. You can go hiking. You can go to your favorite restaurant. You can go to the lake by yourself or with some friends.
Self-care also looks like manicures and pedicures. It looks like chiropractor appointments on a regular basis! It looks like Pilates classes on a regular basis! It looks like you going for a walk, or going to your favorite Zumba class or swim class!
All of the little things that you think you don’t have time to do because you are being pulled in a million different directions. Maybe it’s a demanding job. Maybe you have a spouse and a family, and homeowner problems. These priorities should be priorities, AND so are your needs.
Your needs must come first on a regular basis. Saying, “I’m going to try to find some time” or “I’m going to hopefully find some time” is just as ridiculous as saying, “I’m going to try to find some time to feed the kids” or “I hope I find some time to go to work” or “I hope I find some time to take a shower!” Switch the level of importance in your brain! Make the time the way that you make time for everything else that you do.
Write your appointment down on your calendar. If it is not scheduled, it will not happen. If it’s not on the calendar, it doesn’t exist. Blocking off time for the event or activity is a must! Make it as important as you would a wedding! If you are planning on getting married, you select a date and a time way in advance, right? You leaving nothing to chance – showing up for your wedding is a non-negotiable!
Tell others that this is going to happen. “Hey, honey, on Friday at two o’clock, I have a nail appointment. I’d love it if you picked up the kids that day. If you can’t, I’d love it if you asked the neighbor, your sister, or your mom because this appointment is a non-negotiable.”
Avoid resistance by letting others involved know what’s in it for them. “If I go and get my hair done, I’ll feel sexier on our date. If I feel sexier on our date, you might get lucky!” Something like that!
Lastly, find a partner that will keep you accountable to your new program! Together you can make sure that you do what you commit to doing for your Self.

It can be tough to get motivated to move during dark, cold days when it’s tempting to sleep in or spend evenings cocooned on the couch. But winter weather doesn’t have to derail your fitness routine. And getting regular exercise can help stave off the stress, depression, and anxiety that sometimes comes hand in hand with shorter days and colder temperatures. So here are a few ideas for indoor workouts that will help you beat the winter blues, keep bad habits at bay, and maybe even shed some holiday-induced hibernation weight.
Yoga offers a wealth of benefits. According to Healthline, some studies show that yoga:
- Can reduce the body’s levels of cortisol, the primary stress hormone.
- Can lead to lower levels of anxiety, fatigue, and depression.
- May help protect against certain conditions caused by chronic inflammation, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
- Can lower blood pressure and heart rate, promoting heart health.
- May help reduce chronic pain in conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome and osteoarthritis.
- May improve sleep quality because it increases practitioners’ levels of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep and wakefulness.
- Can improve strength, flexibility, and balance.
Yoga also helps you stay fit and flexible for other types of exercise routines that work up more of a sweat. And it’s easy to fit into your schedule. If you can’t make it to a class or prefer solo stretch sessions, all you need to get started at home is a mat. There are plenty of DVDs, online resources, and apps that can help you master a poses. You can also check out yoga DVDs for free from your local library if you want to expand your options.
Swimming offers a flood of advantages. According to Fitness, a water workout:
- Acts as a cardio and strength training session at the same time.
- Boosts lung function and blood flow to the brain.
- Is accessible to almost anyone, regardless of age, injury, or athletic ability.
- Has positive effects on blood pressure, cholesterol levels, cardiovascular performance, central nervous system health, cognitive functioning, muscle mass, and blood chemistry, making it a great anti-aging exercise routine.
- Works underutilized muscles and areas including your lower back and core.
- Helps relieve stress. In addition to producing mood-boosting natural brain chemicals, research shows swimming can be a particular effective weapon against stress because being in the water cuts down on the level of sensory information you’re taking in and creates a sense of calm.
If you want to move your winter workouts underwater, you can join a gym or local YMCA with an indoor pool. Many areas also have community centers, schools, and universities that also provide public pool access for a fee. And such facilities typically offer a number of other indoor exercise options worth exploring.
Strength training pulls its weight as an indoor exercise choice, even if you aren’t interested in bulking up. According to Everyday Health, resistance training:
- Helps people lose weight and keep it off because it boosts the calories they burn during day-to-day activities.
- Helps preserve bone and muscle mass as you age.
- Makes you stronger and more fit.
- Improves balance, coordination, and posture. In fact, strength training can reduce your risk of falling by as much as 40 percent.
- Can help combat the effects of some diseases. For instance, for people with type 2 diabetes, strength training — along with other healthy lifestyle changes — can help improve glucose control.
- Can improve your mood, sleep quality, and overall quality of life.
While you can invest in a gym membership or inexpensive equipment including dumbbells and resistance bands, there are also plenty of effective strength training exercises you can do with no equipment at all. For example, you use your own body weight as resistance for exercises including squats, lunges, and push-ups.
Now that you have the movement part down, here are the natural solutions that will help support your winter fitness program:
- Mito2Max® Energy and Stamina Complex: Supports healthy cellular energy production.* Supports healthy mitochondrial function and aerobic capacity, and improves stamina naturally without the use of harmful stimulants.
- Marjoram Essential Oil: Apply to muscles before and after exercising. Add to a soothing massage blend for targeting tired, stressed muscles.
- AromaTouch® Massage Blend: Apply to neck and shoulders to promote feelings of relaxation and lessen tension. Comforting and relaxing effects.
- DeepBlue® Soothing Blend: Invigorating workout blend. Perfect soothing blend after exercise. A few drops of Deep Blue Soothing Blend diluted in Fractionated Coconut Oil can be a part of a cooling and comforting massage after a workout.
- Lemongrass Essential Oil: Combine with carrier oil and massage after a hard workout. Apply after a long run for a refreshing feeling.
(*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.)
I bet you’re now ready to give exercise excuses the cold shoulder this season and try some of these indoor workouts, oils and supplements to fight stress, depression, and that dreaded winter weight gain!
Wondering where the uninvited hard roll of fat that has centered itself in your midsection came from? Nutrition plays a huge role in how your body behaves, but so do your hormones – particularly cortisol.
Cortisol is known as the body’s “stress hormone” as it helps regulate your immune system, blood glucose levels, and other important functions during times of stress. In a perfect world, your body and its cortisol secretion process would return to normal once the crisis is over. But usually cortisol circulation remains in turbo gear for much longer than expected.
Common Contributors to Overproduction of Cortisol
Stress is the big one. When your body experiences stress, it is prompted to store fat to protect the vital organs from being invaded by toxins that may result from physical, emotional or environmental reasons.
Irregular circadian rhythms caused by a whacky sleep schedule. Whether it’s worrying, partying, or working, interrupting your sleep pattern for extended periods of time may contribute to the accumulation of hard fat around your belly!
Another contributor is sugar, found in many of the foods that make up your regular diet, as well as in the comfort food that you turn to when you simply want to disconnect.
All this may tempt you to hit the gym a little harder to start “burning off” some of that fat. Yet rigorous exercise might actually perpetuate the problem as your body considers this another stressor!
What to Do
There are plenty of natural approaches to help alleviate some of the stress and help you release some of the unwanted fat. Here are my Top 4:
- Gentle exercise. Nothing punishing to the body. Try restorative yoga, swimming or walking at a moderate pace for at least 20 continuous minutes at a time. Practice rhythmic breathing as best you can while exercising. This combination of movement and proper breathing techniques keeps your central nervous system calm and accelerates detoxification of the body. The less toxins in your body, the less it needs to hold on to the fat!
- Eat Functional Meals. There’s something to be said about the energetics of food. Kale, spinach and other leafy greens are loaded with electrical energy they receive from natural light – and energy might be just what you need to power through what you’re facing. Sweet potatoes and other tubers grow deep in the earth and promote a grounded vibe that might help you feel rooted and in control. Berries are naturally sweet and painted with bright and vibrant colors. These can help you feel buoyant and light, making it easier to let go of stuff that is weighing you down.
- Use Essential Oils. There is a plethora of Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG®) essential oils available for daily use! Lavender, Wild Orange and Frankincense are great to help promote relaxation in the body. Peppermint and Ginger are amazing to help promote alertness while also supporting healthy digestive function. Diffuse them, add them to your bath or make yourself a nice cup of tea* before bedtime. (*Methods of application depend on the oil and on you, and not all oils are safe to be taken internally. Please contact me for more information on this.)
- Develop a Grateful Mindset. I know how tough it might be to focus on the good when things aren’t going as planned, but that is when it’s extra important! Counting your blessings regularly and expressing gratitude for what is going well gives your brain evidence that it is capable of having/doing/experiencing better. This helps your brain tap into a memory bank full of ideas on how to manage things, moving it from stagnation to creativity. Make a list of all you love and have, and all you love and don’t yet have and empower your brain to start taking action on this!
